Children’s Faith Formation Expectations
It is the desire of our parish to nurture,
support and provide the parents of our parish with the needed tools
to fulfill their responsibilities as parents to be the primary catechists
of their children, passing on our Catholic faith. In doing so, Our
Lady of Lourdes provides a reference library filled with a wide range
of books, videos, and resources. This library contains resources
for the adult learner as well as many resources to use with children
and for use as family units. Our parish also provides a weekly children’s
faith formation program for all parish children Pre-3 through the
5th grade. Along with our weekly program, our parish offers a sacramental
preparation program each fall to prepare the children for receiving
the sacrament of Reconciliation, and each February the parish offers
preparation for First Eucharist.
It is our expectation that children entering
kindergarten attend a weekly faith formation program and that children
of this age begin attending Mass on a weekly basis. Beginning with
formal faith formation at this age insures that children have a solid
foundation when they arrive at the year where Reconciliation and
Eucharist are offered (second grade). There is a great deal of learning
about God, community and church that goes on between kindergarten
and sacramental preparation. It is also our expectation that children
continue their formal faith formation up and through the sacrament
of Confirmation.
It is the intent of the Children’s Faith
Formation Department to support each and every family of our parish,
realizing that each family comes to our parish with its own needs
and history. It is for this reason that each family will be dealt
with on an individual basis in regards to any exceptions to our stated
expectations. Those families who come seeking sacraments for their
child will be required to complete the missed catechesis.
